"When I was 14, Michael Brown was shot and killed and at the same time I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. This marked a turning point in my life where I came to understand mortality in a different light and I became painfully aware of the racism that plagues this country. With my grandfather's legacy as a powerful civil rights attorney in my head, I knew at that moment that whatever I chose to do in life, it had to be for the betterment of my people and for obtaining the justice we have so long deserved."
