Project Description :

PDAC plans a biannual carnival to bring students with disabilities to campus for a Carnival event with foods, games, and performances. There is a Board of volunteers who establish a timeline for the preparation and execution of the carnival, as well as oversee the tasks being completed. Volunteers can join to become part of the board who plans the event once a year (including logistics, budgeting, training, recruitment) or can volunteer at the event itself, where they are paired with a child with disabilities and spend the carnival hanging out with them and accompanying them throughout the activities.

Frequency/Time Commitment Expected: At the start of the festival, PDAC board members meet once a week for approximately an hour to discuss and plan for the upcoming semester carnival. As the date of the festival approaches, the time commitment for these board meetings increase to at most two and a half hours. Furthermore, once volunteers are recruited, volunteers are required to attend an online training session weeks before the carnival. They are also expected to attend the carnival and pair up with a child with special needs during its entire duration from 1pm to 4pm, in addition to carnival preparation at 12pm and cleanup at the end of the carnival. In total, volunteers participate in the preparation and hosting of the carnival for about 6 hours. This frequency and level of time commitment usually stays the same for both the fall and spring carnival.
