Field Guide to Service

At the Pace Center, we strive to help students learn to do service well and have a positive impact in the community. So how do you do service well? In service, learning is a process that involves the whole person: thinking, feeling and examining before, during and after engagement. The Field Guide to Service provides simple steps and exercises to help you prepare, engage and reflect effectively.

How do I get a Field Guide?
Are you a Princeton University student, faculty member or staff member?
Sign up for one of our Volunteer 101 Workshops where you’ll get a copy of your very own and learn how to better prepare for service, engage in service and reflect after service. Not able to make it to Volunteer 101? Fill out our Field Guide Request Form and a Pace Center staff member will follow up with you.

Not a Princeton University student, faculty member or staff member? Are you a Princeton alum?
Use our online version below to click through, print exercises and explore the guide. Want a physical copy to make notes in and call your very own, or looking to use the Field Guide for a workshop or event of your own? Fill out our Field Guide Request Form and a Pace Center staff member will follow up with you. There may be a fee depending on the quantity needed.

How do I use the Field Guide?
We are thrilled that you want to use the Field Guide to Service! We welcome you to use it in service and share it with others. To do so, we ask that you respect the guide and its contents:

    • Please credit the Pace Center for Civic Engagement and Princeton University when sharing the guide with others, in presentations, or when using it or its exercises.
    • Please keep its appearance and content intact. We hope you are inspired by the guide to create exercises or content of your own. When doing so, please avoid directly lifting language or design elements and using them as your own.
    • And last but not least, please share a photo and short narrative with us  at pacemedia@princeton.edu about how you used the guide and what you learned so that we can continue to improve the Field Guide to Service as a resource and tool.

See you out in the field!
